Starting a new job in a company means lot of new tasks, a barrage of new information and plenty of new faces. We don’t leave you on your own with your questions and first impressions when starting here at MID! To make sure you feel supported right from the start, we offer a mentoring program designed to help you settle in and find your feet quickly.
What does it involve?
From day one, an experienced colleague is by your side. Your mentor knows how things work at MID, takes the time to listen, shares handy hints with you and helps making getting started at MID as easy as possible. Whether you’re joining us in consulting, development, marketing or any other area, we match you with someone who knows the ropes.
How does it work?
The mentoring program typically runs for one year. Once a month, you get together with your mentor and chat in a relaxed atmosphere. On sunny days, our rooftop terrace on the 5th floor is the perfect place to talk things through while enjoying a great view. You’ll discuss what’s currently on your mind, where you might need support and any issues you might have. And the best thing? It’s all confidential. What happens at mentoring stays at mentoring.
What do you talk about?
You decide together what you want to focus on. Whether you’d like to learn more about our company culture, develop your professional skills or talk through everyday work challenges: mentoring is the right place for all of it. Soft skills, questions about career development and navigating relationships with colleagues or managers can also be part of the conversation. Personal topics are welcome too, as long as both sides feel comfortable.
Why mentoring?
At MID, we believe that people do their best work when they feel comfortable and supported. Having a trusted companion from the very beginning helps ensure a successful start and allows full potential to be reached. That’s why our mentoring program is a key part of our welcoming culture and a clear sign that we are truly part of a forMIDable team.
Mentee Experience
Stefan: “When I started at MID, I was excited about what lay ahead: new tasks, new colleagues, new structures. What really made my start easier though, was the mentoring program and my mentor in particular.
From the very beginning, there was a level of openness that genuinely surprised me. We got on straight away and I knew immediately that my mentor wasn’t just about technical questions and organizational tasks. We discussed real interests and I felt like I could talk openly and honestly with her.
Of course we would chat about the job and the challenges of everyday work in our meetings. But we also chatted about personal topics, what was on my mind or simply what was going on. I can ask her anything (including her opinion on private matters) and she’ll give me an honest answer.
This relationship of trust is incredibly valuable to me. It gives me confidence, orientation and the feeling that I’ve truly been accepted here at MID. I know I can come to her with anything, without being judged. That’s what really makes the difference for me.
I also think it’s great that mentoring is not a one-way street; the mentee can also support the mentor with their own experiences.
For me, the mentoring program at MID is more than just a structured onboarding tool. It’s being part of a truly forMIDable team. And I’m grateful to be part of it.”
What the mentor has to say about it all
Betül: “Time and again, I feel a sense of curiosity and excitement when People & Culture approach me about mentoring a new colleague. I’m quite proud to say that during my little over seven years at MID, I’ve already had the opportunity to support quite a few new team members as they started their journey with us.
From my perspective, a successful start at a new company is not only about having the right expertise for the job or learning existing processes. What truly makes the difference are the personal relationships that develop along the way. This is exactly where our mentoring program plays such a valuable role.
As Stefan already described, the mentor–mentee relationship often begins with a chat over a coffee, an open ear during the first hectic weeks and support with organizational questions in a safe, trusted space.
I can confirm with a smile on my face that as trust grows in a short amount of time, the topics of conversation blossom to those unrelated with work. The first coffee can quickly turn into meeting up for lunch and a drink after work.
In our conversations, I make sure my mentee feels comfortable, understood and truly seen. I try to sense the mood of the person sitting across from me and to read between the lines to recognize if there might be challenges or concerns hidden beneath the surface. It’s important to me that both easy topics as well as difficult onces can be discussed openly, respectfully and on equal footing. Reliability is another key aspect for me. I make sure that no important topic gets lost along the way. Building a shared understanding is essential. Our open feedback culture and clearly addressing expectations helps tremendously.
In my experience, the mentoring program works best when both sides recognize what can be achieved, are open to one another and work together to develop solutions, options and ideas for growth. A mentor should always keep in mind that every person has different needs and that true mentoring requires empathy and the ability to see things from another perspective.
The positive feedback I receive from my mentees reinforces me in my role as a mentor. I find it incredibly rewarding to watch each individual grow and develop. It’s great to get to know and appreciate the person behind the role.
For me, the mentoring program at MID is more than just a box to tick. It is a living part of our company culture. People grow best where they feel seen, understood and supported; and that is exactly what our mentoring program is designed to provide.”
